Iron Rod 030 – Elijah and John the Baptist

00:00 / 1:18:34

D&C 2 tells us that the Priesthood will be revealed by the hand of Elijah. But the scriptural record tells us nothing about Elijah conferring priesthood by hand to Joseph. The one conferral of priesthood by the hand of an angel we have record of is John the Baptist conferring the priesthood of Aaron. In this episode, we look at the scriptural links between Elijah and John the Baptist and discuss radical concepts introduced in the Inspired Version of the Bible. We kick the episode off with an email from a bishop, and a discussion about birthday parties.

Iron Rod 029 – The office of bishop

00:00 / 1:13:43

The scriptures give fairly specific descriptions of the duties of a bishop, and as we discussed last week, that the bishop should be paid for his duties. This week we review just what the scriptures dictate that a bishop should do, and compare that with what the current role of the bishop is.

Iron Rod 028 – Paid clergy? Yes and no

00:00 / 1:14:58

Mormonism has a complicated relationship with paying church leaders. We have scriptures that condemn priestcrafts and the Church has often bragged about not having a paid clergy. Yet the church also defends paying Church leaders a “living stipend”. This episode searches out what the scriptures have to say, a reveals that the D&C commands that some leaders be paid while others must not be paid…the only problem is today’s Church does the exact opposite!

Iron Rod 027 – The LDS endowment, more or less

00:00 / 1:31:19

The modern LDS church teaches that within temples we can receive ordinances beyond baptism that are necessary for our salvation. These ordinances are so sacred that they aren’t even mentioned in the scriptures, yet we are told that they have been revealed to prophets in every dispensation since Adam. This week we explore these claims and test them against what the scriptures teach. Could millions of people truly be suffering under delusion?

00:00 / 56:33

Scripture teaches that the Gospel at its core is very simple. Jesus himself declared His doctrine to be faith, repentance and baptism (of water and fire) and then stated that “more or less” than this cometh of evil. In this episode we delve into the many scriptural evidences of the simplicity of the Gospel and begin to contrast these scriptural teachings with the complexity of  current LDS doctrine.  This episode is required listening in preparation for our next episode which will discuss the LDS temple endowment ceremony.

Iron Rod 025 – The Word of Wisdom

00:00 / 1:31:08

Perhaps one of the most iconic practices of modern Mormonism is the prohibition of alcohol, tobacco, coffee, and tea. Failure to adhere to the current interpretation is grounds for disciplinary action and considered a sign a spiritual weakness. Yet is wasn’t always so. Not only does the modern interpretation conflict with the original interpretation during the life of Joseph Smith, it also conflicts with other scriptures. This week’s episode discusses what the scriptures say, and what happened historically to go from a word of wisdom given not by commandment or by constraint, to an absolute requirement for coming unto Christ through baptism.

Iron Rod 024 – Identifying the False Traditions of Our Fathers

00:00 / 59:28

Pilate famously asked, “What is truth?” It’s a relevant question for our day and age as we are faced with contradictions between what is preached from the pulpit and what is written in scripture. Watcher makes a special appearance this week to discuss how we can identify the false traditions we inherit, and how we can correct course when our navigators are pointing us in the wrong direction.

Iron Rod 023 – Can our leaders lead us astray?

00:00 / 1:15:09

One modern doctrine that is repeated quite often is that the leaders of the LDS Church cannot lead the people astray. Even if they wanted to, God would take away their agency and end their lives before allowing them to lead the people astray. While this doctrine is taught from the pulpit as an absolute promise from God, the scriptures have something different to say about the leaders in the last days. We review what God has spoken through his ancient prophets about the latter-day shepherds and leaders of the house of Israel.

Iron Rod 021 – Sealing

00:00 / 59:27

Modern Mormon doctrine emphasizes the need for families to be sealed together for eternity through certain temple ordinances beyond baptism. In this episode we explore what the scriptures have to say about sealing and trace the history of the Law of Adoption that has morphed over time to what is practiced today.

Iron Rod 020 – The Name of the Father

00:00 / 1:00:36

Modern Mormonism teaches that Elohim is the name of the Father, and Jehovah is the name of Jesus before his earthly ministry. This is taught in the temple and from the pulpit. But it’s not taught from the scriptures. In this episode, we review how the scriptures use Elohim and Jehovah to consistently paint a dramatically different picture than what the LDS Church paints. We also review the how this doctrine changed over the course of 75 years until it finally stabilized on what we know today.

Iron Rod 019 – Coming to Know the Lord by Caring for the Poor

00:00 / 1:01:08

The Lord teaches us in scripture that tithing is to be used primarily for the poor. In this episode, we explore how we can come to know the Lord through dealing justly with the poor who will always be among us. We also discuss how we are actually stealing form the poor through our corrupted tithing system and share how we personally have chosen to address this situation.

Iron Rod 018 – The Holy Ghost

00:00 / 1:00:38

This week’s topic has several interesting angles: are the Holy Ghost and the Holy Spirit the same thing or different?  Is the Holy Ghost a personage? What is the gift of the Holy Ghost and how does one receive it? Can we receive it today? Not only do we answer those questions, but there’s also a special musical number by Searcher.

Iron Rod 017 – The Succession Crisis (Part 2)

00:00 /

Picking up from last episode, Sidney has been excommunicated and Brigham Young, as head of the Quorum of the Twelve, begins to made rapid organizational changes in defiance of scriptural requirements. We cover those changes and the unintended consequences that continue to cause organizational changes even in 2019. We conclude with the conference in 1847 in which Brigham reconstitutes the First Presidency and some of the succession policies he made along the way to make sure the person he wanted became the third president of the church.

Iron Rod 016 – The Succession Crisis (Part 1)

00:00 / 53:39

After the deaths of Joseph and Hyrum Smith, the church was uncertain who should take charge. Several candidates presented themselves as the right person, but the biggest challenge was between Sidney Rigdon, member of the First Presidency, and Brigham Young, member of the Quorum of the Twelve. On August 8, both men addressed the church and a vote was held, with Brigham the victor. Within a month, Sidney would be excommunicated by Brigham.

In this episode, we discuss the succession parameters given by the Lord in the Doctrine and Covenants and how there would have been no crisis if the scriptures and laws of the church had been followed. We also review the words of William Marks, president of the stake in Nauvoo, who defended Sidney during his excommunication trial.

Iron Rod 015 – Restoration of the Melchizedek Priesthood

00:00 /

Tradition teaches that the Melchizedek Priesthood was restored in 1829. Yet many documented sources indicate it happened in June 1831 during a conference at Morley Farm, and what was restored is different from what we have now. This episode discusses what the Melchizedek Priesthood really is and why the conference at Morley Farm deserves far more attention than it gets.

Iron Rod 014 – The Three Watches

00:00 /

The Joseph Smith Translation of Luke 12 make a significant change to some information Jesus provides his apostles. Whereas the KJV has Christ talk about a lord who could come in either the second watch or the third watch, the JST has him coming in the first watch, the second watch, and the third watch. And all times he comes as a thief in the night. This forms the basis of the Three Watches, and helps explain why the dispensation of the fullness of times has not yet arrived.

In this episode we show how many other scriptures support this Three Watch model, and also discuss related topics like Joseph Smith’s second commission, and why we should really call the 1830s the “Foundation” rather than the “Restoration”.

Iron Rod 012 – The Biblical Profile of Joseph Smith

00:00 /

Joseph’s behavior after 1836 was significantly different than his behavior before 1836. It’s important to understand why this is. In this episode, we begin to look at the prophetic profile of Joseph that is contained in the Bible. This Biblical profile predicts a change in behavior, and with links in the Book of Mormon and Doctrine and Covenants, identifies Joseph Smith as the subject of the profile.
